Water feature or fountain?

Water feature or fountain, what is the difference?

A water feature feature has an object, for water to run down or fall from, such as this glass pyramid. Equally it could be a rock or some other material. There is no livestock in a water feature, and typically, as shown you can not see the main pool of water (sump) The pump is sitting in the sump.

A fountain is where water is pumped upwards, emits from a nozzle or orifice and falls back to the pool or sump, but has nothing to run down. To the right is what most people would call a fountain. This is a fountain nozzle which is quite common in ponds

A pond is a pool of water which has livestock, such as fish /  frogs /   insects, also plants, it does not have to have a fountain or waterfall. To the right is a small pond.

Positioning

Consideration should be taken when deciding where to put your fountain, water feature or pond, preferably away from trees, and on level ground.

It should be away from trees for two reasons, the first is that when it autumn (fall to our American readers) the leaves will fall into your pool, these will then decay and rot, not only do they not look nice, but if its a pond can become harmful.  The other reason is roots, tree roots can puncture liners

Lights

Lights can be used to bring your feature or fountain to life when its dark, we do not really recommend lights for "ponds". Red, yellow and orange are good for lighting water falls, fountains and features can have any colour. Green and blue lights are also good for lighting the surrounding plants. Lights can be found on our components site

Quality and price

As with most things in life you will get what you pay for. A pump or light may seem cheap, but will it last? We have tested several  brands of submersible lights in most cases,  within a few weeks of  being installed they had water inside the fitting. Small pumps, although relatively cheap to buy are often not up to the job of operating big nozzles. We do not test small pumps since we do as suggested, look on the box for the flow rates.

If you are considering a waterfall you should see this
